Global Day of Justice poster

Global Day for Climate Justice

Posted on 1st November 2021

Join us! As communities around the world unite to send a message to global leaders meeting at the Conference of The Parties (COP26) to safeguard our planet, there will be a gathering in Llanfyllin. On Saturday 6th November from 10:30, local groups including Brace and Dolen Ffermio are coming together on Market Square.

Our aim is to spread the news of what practical efforts are already underway in the town to make our everyday lives more sustainable – from gardening to cooking to learning repair skills – and to discuss new ideas. We want to reach out to everyone to join us. All are welcome. There will be live music. If your community group hasn’t been approached by one of us yet but you would like to take part, please get in touch.

What is COP26?

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is an annual event that brings world leaders together to review how the climate emergency is being addressed and commit to make improvements.

The 26th conference is being held right now in Glasgow. This is a landmark test of the commitments made back in 2015 in Paris where world leaders promised*to try to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C. Currently, the world is on track for 1.5°C of warming by the 2030s and 3°C later this century.

World leaders knew this when they made the Paris agreement, but committed to improve their commitments every 5 years. This is the first time this will be put to the test.

What’s the problem?

Limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C is the only way to avoid the worst effects of devastating climate change. The currently projected increase of 3°C or more carries the risk of runaway climate change, and will have devastating effects on humans and all other life on earth.

What can I do?

You can campaign for your MP to support the Climate & Ecological Emergency (CEE) Bill. Craig Williams, MP for Montgomeryshire, is currently not a supporter of the bill.

Drafted by scientists, legal experts, ecological economists and environ-mentalists, the CEE Bill is designed specifically to reverse the climate and ecological breakdown we’re facing.

The Bill requires the UK to take responsibility for its fair share of greenhouse gas emissions, to actively restore biodiverse habitats, and to stop damaging our natural world through the production, transportation and disposal of the goods we consume.
