🍲 Community Fridge Launch!

Posted on 3rd November 2022

Llanfyllin’s community fridge project is nearly ready to launch and has a new name – Community Pantri Cymunedol – reflecting its wider potential.

Organisers have been purchasing a fridge and freezer, finalising paperwork and developing a brand for the project which received ÂŁ4000 of funding from the charity Hubbub.

The Pantri will be based at the Cross Keys and managed by Shan and Darren Mayor’s team with BRACE volunteers.

Mrs Mayor said: “This is really exciting. It naturally builds on what we were already doing with the Nosh da pay-as-you-feel community lunches. We can see this being a real gathering place for people to come together to share food.”

The idea behind community fridges is to save food waste through donations of products near their expiry date – from businesses, from householders or from holiday makers who don’t want to take food home with them at the end of their stay – and make them available for free to everyone to help themselves.

BRACE Chair Alison Alexander said: “The idea is a simple one but the mechanics of making it all happen and – crucially – making sure you always have a clean fridge full of fresh produce is not straightforward. The Cross Keys is going to be a great hub for this project because they are used to maintaining excellent food hygiene and the Nosh da meals can make use of excess produce. It’s a natural fit.”

The Pantri is launching over the next two months and is looking for volunteers – if you’d like to help out please email the BRACE committee:
